Pharmaceutical companies have introduced solutions such as remote-based monitoring, centralised risk-based monitoring, data analytics tools, electronic consent (e-consent), electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePRO) tools, telehealth services, and optional home visits to ensure trial continuity and participant safety. These technologies and methodologies, born out of necessity during the pandemic, have not only maintained the integrity of studies but are likely to shape the future of clinical trials.
Recognising the widespread impact of the pandemic, regulatory authorities such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have provided essential guidance to support the industry, investigators, and patients during this period of disruption. These guidelines offer practical advice on mitigating risks and adapting trial processes to ensure the continuation of essential research.
The EMA's “Guidance on the Management of Clinical Trials During the COVID-19 Pandemic” (version 3, published on 28th April 2020) highlights key considerations for ongoing and future clinical trials. This document emphasises the need for careful evaluation of the pandemic’s impact on various aspects of clinical research, including ongoing trials, the initiation of new trial sites, recruitment efforts, participant involvement, and the launch of new studies. Importantly, it advises that these evaluations must align with national recommendations and the prevailing public health context.

Remote and digital solutions have demonstrated their effectiveness not only in ensuring patient safety but also in improving accessibility and efficiency.
